The Irish Film Institute is the national body with responsibility for the promotion of film culture in Ireland and as part of the IFI, the Irish Film Archive acquires, preserves and makes permanently accessible Ireland’s moving image heritage. The Archive collection has grown from a modest core of Irish films distributed by the Irish Film Institute to a collection of over 20,000 cans. Public facilities at the Archive include individual viewing facilities and the Tiernan MacBride reference library, which holds books and periodicals relating to Irish and world cinema.  The Archive also facilitates national and international non-competitive festivals of Irish cinema, which show case Irish film.
