★★★★ The Irish Times ★★★★★ The Upcoming

Bowie-esque rock star Marianne Lane (Tilda Swinton) is vacationing with her documentary filmmaker boyfriend Paul (Matthias Schoenaerts) on the Italian island of Pantelleria. She has undergone surgery on her vocal cords, and is forbidden from speaking. Into their idyll comes the oversized figure of Harry (Ralph Fiennes), a motor-mouth music producer and Marianne’s former partner, breaking the spell with his intrusive behaviour.

With him is his daughter Penelope (Dakota Johnson), along for the trip having been just recently acquainted with her father. Tensions – sexual and otherwise – are soon rising high in the sun-kissed paradise.

The second collaboration between Swinton and director Guadagnino, A Bigger Splash marries the visual panache of I Am Love (2009) to a heady cocktail of sexual jealousies, secrets and lies. It is the second adaptation of Alain Page’s titular novel, filmed as La Piscine in 1969 with Alain Delon and Romy Schneider. (Notes by David O’Mahony.)
